Space for the Farmer: The Home Office
Farmers are mobile and so are their offices, most of the time. Smart phones, laptops, iPads and other technology make it possible for farmers to do business on the go. But the importance of the home office is still as relevant today as ever before. Whether it is in its own room in the house, part of a kitchen, in the machine shed, or even a barn, (like Mark and Pam Lage of Sheffield, story) the basic format should remain consistent.
Invest in a quality computer and furniture for your space, because you will spend a lot of the time you’re not in the tractor, in this area of your office. Whatever needs to be recorded on the computer regularly should have a home near the computer.
Public space
Be it the kitchen table, or a conference room, be sure to have an area large enough to spread out GPS maps or seed catalogs when dealers and consultants visit your office.
Administrative area
Bills, receipts and other records need a space of importance and prominence. There are many organizational options now available - folders, containers and filing cabinets - that will allow for you to be organized and express personal taste.
Project station
Ensure maximum efficiency and creativity by having all the tools for the job handy – whatever they might be. Keep working space open and organized.
